CEPER: Barometer of Fear – What are Serbs most afraid of?
The latest study by CEPER, conducted in 12 countries across the region, Barometer of Fear 2024, reveals the biggest concerns of the population in Central Europe. The greatest source of worry is climate change and global warming – these issues have been identified as the most concerning in four countries: Hungary (3.55), Croatia (3.18), Serbia (3.13), and Montenegro (2.75).

In North Macedonia, economic difficulties top the fear ranking with an exceptionally high index of 3.86. A similar trend is observed in Poland (3.56) and Romania (3.46), where economic insecurity also dominates.

Geopolitical tensions, especially the Russia-Ukraine conflict, have further increased anxiety levels across the region. Concerns about the "war in the neighboring country" have been steadily rising: in 2020, 27 percent of respondents identified war as one of their biggest worries, in 2021 this percentage increased to 31 percent, while in 2024, almost half of the respondents reported significant concerns about this threat.
