Five Directions for the New Era of PR and Marketing
07/29/2025 • Profession news
In the next five years, the communications and marketing industry will undergo greater changes than it has in the past five decades, according to Jim O’Leary from the agency Weber Shandwick. He identifies five key shifts - the so-called “5X” - that are shaping the future of the profession: the Attention Economy, the Creator Economy, the Stakeholder Economy, the Experience Economy, and the Intelligence Economy.
Instead of merely seeking media space, brands must create ideas that audiences want to share, in collaboration with creators who today hold more influence than traditional media. In an environment of heightened political and social tensions, a company’s reputation increasingly depends on its leaders’ ability to understand cultural currents. Additionally, a new generation of consumers expects immersive brand experiences, while artificial intelligence accelerates all these changes and becomes a key driver of competitiveness.
Leaders who understand this convergence - from earned media to AI tools - will be prepared for the transformation that lies ahead.
