Is Blogging Still Worth It in the Age of AI Search?

AI is changing the way users access information, but blogs have not lost their value for brands. Their role is shifting from channels designed to generate large volumes of clicks to sources of authoritative, structured and useful content that AI systems can recognise, cite and incorporate into their answers.
Traditional organic traffic is declining as an increasing number of searches end with a synthesised AI-generated answer, without the user clicking on a link. Estimates suggest that traditional search volume could fall by 25%, while the visits that do come through AI search may be more valuable. On average, an LLM-referred visitor may be 4.4 times more valuable than a traditional organic search visitor, while ChatGPT referral traffic records a conversion rate of 7.1%.
It is also important to understand which sources AI systems actually cite. Brands cannot rely solely on their own commercial pages, as their websites typically account for only 5–10% of the sources used by AI search. A large proportion of citations comes from forums, Wikipedia, media outlets and other third-party sources, with Reddit and Quora accounting for 52.5% of citations in one broader analysis.
However, blogs have an advantage when it comes to informational queries. An analysis of 75,000 AI-generated answers found that articles were cited 2.7 times more frequently, while articles and list-based content together accounted for 67% of informational citations. This means that a well-structured blog post that clearly answers a specific question can still serve as an important source for AI-generated responses.
Content freshness is also becoming increasingly important. AI systems are more likely to cite newer and regularly updated pages, while 76.4% of the most frequently cited ChatGPT pages had been updated within the previous 30 days.
For this reason, a blog should no longer be viewed as an archive of articles, but as a living knowledge resource that is regularly expanded and refreshed while continuously strengthening the brand’s authority.
