The official opening of the exhibition entitled "Maps" by artist Jelena Borovčanin will be held on September 5 at the Italian Institute of Culture in Belgrade, starting at 7 p.m. The exhibition will be open until September 20, with free admission for all visitors.
This independent exhibition of the artist from Kruševac comes after an extremely successful exhibition held in Venice in October last year when she and two other artists from Serbia were part of the exhibition "Identities", which met with great enthusiasm and recognition from eminent people in the field of art.
Through the "Maps" project, the artist explores the connections between past and contemporary worlds, and by combining glass and coins, these works represent the rich history of the Balkans, Venice and the wider Mediterranean. The maps symbolize journeys through time and space, with a special focus on the cultural and historical relations between Serbia and Italy, which the artist, a political scientist by profession, studied during her studies.
In her work, Jelena Borovčanin uses non-media elements such as glass, mosaics and ancient coins, which she integrates into her decorative installations and bidimensional works. Her artistic expression stands out through complex intercultural concepts, and the unusual use of Murano glass, inspired by Venetian art, further enriches her style. This carefully selected material, with its alchemical heritage, became a key part of her work, confirming Jelena's commitment to exploring the cultural connections between East and West.
The curator of the exhibition "Maps", also the curator of the previous exhibition "Identities", is Mr. Saverio Simi de Burgis, a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice.
In addition to the Map concept and related works, Jelena's other individual works will also be exhibited at the exhibition, and visitors will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the entire work of the Serbian artist.

About the artist:
Jelena Borovčanin was born in Kruševac in 1987.
She entered the art scene with her first solo exhibition in 2017. The critical public recognizes Jelena's technique as a new direction of contemporary art. She has a master's degree in political science.
Jelena creates pictures from glass, as a self-taught artist, using a technique whose beginnings date back to the moment when glass spilled on her in an accident. This event represents the vision that Jelena shows through motifs during ten years of creativity. Through the symbiosis of lines, colors and glass fragments, and coins and gold leaves, Jelena creates a world of native art through an open way of thinking.
During creation, she combined different techniques and materials and thus built her identity through the basic element of strong energy - glass. This way of creating works is very complex because the compositions are in a thoughtful dialogue with a conceptual story. She exhibited in Serbia and the region. Some of the works are in the National Bank of Serbia, in the Central Town Square in Kruševac, and in many countries as far as California at collectors.
