PepsiCo, Inc. (NASDAQ:PEP) today announced a new plan to spread regenerative farming practices across 7 million acres, approximately equal to its entire agricultural footprint. Additional 2030 goals within the agenda include improving the livelihoods of more than 250,000 people in its agricultural supply chain and sustainably sourcing 100% of its key ingredients. The company estimates the effort will eliminate at least 3 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by the end of the decade. the program will be expanded to new crops and used as a basis for partnership with farmers and the transition to regenerative agriculture.
The goals set in this way are the result of the fact that agriculture is the foundation of the food system, as well as that during the last century, conventional agricultural practices have contributed to significant soil loss and degradation. In addition, the food system is the source of about a third of all greenhouse gases, while agriculture can be a solution to reduction of CO2 emissions.
