Value-based management, known as VBM was the ruling approach to management well into the turn of the 21st century. VBM was defined exclusively as shareholder value – producing profit in excess of the cost of capital. By focusing on maximising profit across your business units, a company would prosper and everybody would benefit, went the story. CSR was then a side activity mainly for internal team building and external PR.
